Open Question

  • I'm looking to get into [real] photography. Should I go with a DSLR or standard SLR. Which do you recommend?

I've always had a point and shoot Digital so I know how to work the technology- I am just not sure (for the price) if I should go with a 35mm or Digital SLR as I begin experimenting with photography as an art form. Any advice you can give would be very much appreciated.

  • Go with a DSLR
I’m afraid film is going to be the "buggy whip" of the 21st century and while it will be around awhile yet you may as well take advantage of the really big benefits of digital. I suggest you stick with Canon or Nikon, they are the REAL camera companies and you are buying into a total system of lenses, flashes etc. that is very versatile.
I would also suggest a very good book on this: Bryan Peterson’s "Understanding Exposure", which was very helpful to me. The immediate feedback you get from shooting digital will make you a better photographer faster, too. Have fun!

  • "DSLR, for sure!"

The fact that you don't have to develop film, or use up a roll of film, makes this for me an easy decision, I think! I always hated having to take my film into be developed, and so that limited how many photos I took. Now I am free to take a photo of my big toe, my dinner, or a bug out in the yard, so my creativity is unencumbered by my wallet!

Of course, there are certain advantages to using a traditional 35mm, but it just seems like there are so many more with a DSLR.  You can do as much, if not more, with the DSLR than you can with the 35mm.  But, if you are a purist, and don't "believe" in digital altering your images, then you might want to stick with a 35mm.  But the fact that you can take 100's and 100's of images with the digital SLR at no extra expense (unless you also print them) is such a huge benefit, especially to one who is learning about photography.

I guess, of course, that the money you save NOT buying a DSLR would buy you a lot of film and developing...

But still, even the die-hard film camera purists in my photo club are going digital...one is still hiding his purchase, not wanting to admit that he owns one!! LOL!!  But we know!!

  • Go digital, because experimenting on film will more than make up for the extra cost of the digital camera.

You can also learn more on a Digital Camera than on a film, as you can see the results right away and make changes to the setting when appropriate.
