  • How can I clean my dog's ears?

I got a dog with floppy ears and I've been cleaning them with a warm washcloth every week. The vet says her ears are infected and they need to be "cleaned better". How do I go about doing this? Please be specific. Thanks!

  • I have a Hound dog with long floppy ears.  I also had this problem, because she loves to roll in the dirt and mud.  I talked with my vet about what to do, since she sometimes would scratch at her ears.  I was told to use Dog Disinfectant Ear Wipes.  They look a lot like the wet baby cleaners, and come in a package that keeps them fresh. Once you have them you need to sit your dog down and work with a clean one per ear.  Never use the same one twice, because you can spread things from one ear to the other.  Gently rub as far down as you feel comfortable with, don't go into the ear canal.  Pull the dirt and grim out, cleaning away.   I do this twice a week, Sundays and Wednesdays.  The only exception is if I see her scratching between cleanings. Hope that helps you, if you still have issues ask your vet for a product to use.  While you are asking the vet also ask them to demo how they suggest you do it.

  • We have English setters! My spouse is the ear-guy, and he regularly checks and cleans their ears. We get extra-long swaps, or use twisted strips of paper toweling to get down in the bottom. He also sometimes uses a commercial ear cleaner, squirts it in, and massages the ear from the outside to move it around and loosen things up in there, then swaps it out. He checks their ears daily in sticky weather, and cleans as needed. We have nothing to go on for this except empirical evidence, but some dog foods seem to feed ear infections, and we KNOW that hot humid weather does NOTHING to help their ears. John does NOT appreciate my suggestion of clothespinning their ears on top of their heads, nor the hair-net idea. I was DEEPLY wounded by this, of course ;)     + Show complete answer

  • The veterinarians office should have ear drops. This is something similar to ear mite medicine, but you can probably find drops at places like petco or petsmart. Be sure to ask your vet about ear drops before you purchase anything. In the mean time what you are doing is not going to hurt.
