  I've used Acronis to create an image of my current drive, restore it to a new hard drive and then install the new hard drive as my main drive and it worked perfectly.

  Yes it does mean you can make a bootable disc from one that is already working. It is an easy piece of software to use. My hard drive was going bad, you could hear the clicks and sometimes it would not spin. I copied it onto a new disc and was up and running off of the new disc in a couple of hours. It takes a long time to write a large disc. Well worth the money.
